The initial evaluation usually takes 1 ½ hours. Patients are requested to bring a list of their medications, medical
conditions and goals for therapy. The initial evaluation is very formal and based on the medical mode. A psychiatric interview
is conducted, a genogram is drawn and patients complete the SCL-90R self report test of their symptoms.
With patient consent, Dr. Melton coordinates therapy with the treating psychiatrist and/or primary care conditions.
Subsequent sessions are less formal. An assessment symptoms, medication compliance and possible side effects are reviewed.
Depending on the assessment Dr. Melton will recommend Cognitive Therapy or Psychodynamic (Insight-oriented) Therapy.
She primarily works with current issues, but provides an understanding on how past circumstances may be effecting the patient.
Dr. Melton provides free seminars for the community and patients in her practice.
